Student Technology Survey Results

I wanted to gather some information from our grade 6-12 students to help me better support them in their use of technology both at school and at home. I sent the 1500 middle and high school students the survey as a Google Form in their Google Apps email account. The survey was open for two weeks and I received 98 responses. I did not do anything additional to convince students to complete the survey, so I was happy with the number of responses I received. I appreciate the students taking the time to respond!

Here are the results from the first 8 questions:

(Link to full-size online version.)

The last question gave the students the chance to comment when I asked "Anything you would like to tell me about your personal use of technology?" Here are some of the responses.

"I think it would be great to have WiFi all over the school for students to use. I often find myself at school and needing WiFi, especially being part of the theatre program and having long rehearsals when the library is closed. It would make doing online research and such during these times much easier."

"In school I do school related stuff on the school computers. Also at home I use my computer to IM (AIM) friends, update my MySpace, or check homework and grades daily."

"I use technology for mostly browsing, typing papers and research. Other than that, I use it only for Facebook and playing music. :)"

"I am a frequent Facebook user and if the high school were to go wireless with an assumption of the student body having access to it, Facebook wouldn't be as important to us since Nauset students are at school with you and non-Nauset students don't have access to the Web during the day."

I thought it was interesting that the majority of students would use the computer for "looking up information." Given how much students like to socialize, I would have thought that the majority of students' #1 choice use of the computer would be to use social network sites. Also, given the TV commercial hype between PCs and Macs, I would have thought that more kids owned Macs than PCs.

Hello,
I was looking for one such report to include it in my thesis. Rosie has rightly quoted that students mostly like to use computers o visit social media sites to interact with the world beyond their imaginations.

I am a masters student in Instructional Design & Educational Technology. Tonight we are looking online to find sites that support educational technology. The first thing I found was your blog. I have two main questions for you.

1. Why don't the schools have wireless internet access? Are there enough students with laptops to make this beneficial?

2. I know lots of kids are into social networking sites. What are your thoughts of integrating education with social networking sites?

The schools do have wireless Internet access. The problem is the sheer number of computers that would be using our limited bandwidth. We are a fairly rural area and cannot get DSL nor afford large digital leased lines. Cable modems are our only option at this point, and, with 500+ computers at each school already, we would have throughput problems with a few hundred additional computers.

The social networking platform is useful for teaching and learning. However, we have chosen to use Ning and Google Apps for our collaborative work. One of our goals for students are to have them keep their personal and "professional" lives separate, not unlike they will be expected to do in the workplace.

Kathy,
Great post! It is wonderful seeing a Director of Technology going out directly to get feedback from kids. I work with technology integration in a middle school near Fort Wayne, IN with about 1000 students. We have fiberoptics backbone with lots of bandwidth and wireless, yet we block most collaborative areas including google docs. It is a constant battle! I am going to try the same survey and will share with you the results.Interesting that middle school was the highest number respondents. Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy your info and resources!
