The are two fascinating legends about Scargo Lake and Scargo Hill. One is about Scargo, an Indian princess. She receives a gift of fish, but they begin to die. Scargo goes to her father asking him to help. Her idea is that they make a pond for her fish. It should be as long as the strongest brave can shoot an arrow. The lake was dug in one summer, and the excavated dirt from the pond
created the hill.

The second legend says that a young giant, Maushop, wished the Indians to remember him. He dug a deep hole, placing the dirt to the side and created Scargo Hill.  He was tired from his labor and sat down to rest. He smoked his pipe, and the ashes from it fell around the hole. When Maushop finished his work, a heavy rain fell, making the hole a beautiful lake. The ashes from his pipe made the land fertile, so that beautiful pine trees sprang up all around the lake.

The stone tower on top of Scargo Hill is a wonderful place to view Cape Cod Bay.
