On Nauset Light Beach Road (now called Cable Road) there used to be two examples of how a   lighthouse can be reused. One was a home built around a lighthouse, as seen in the bottom picture taken in 1982. This lighthouse was sold by the government in 1923 for 50 cents, and the new owners called their house "The Beacon".

The other lighthouses were sold in 1918 (for about $3.50) and moved up the road to be called "The Towers". This house was built in-between the two lighthouses. This is illustrated in the line drawing. Each lighthouse had two bedrooms and yet still contained the traditional spiral staircase.

The U.S. Government had auctioned off these
lighthouses at the beginning of the century when they were no longer useful. They had been known as "The Three Sisters of Nauset" and had kept the ships in the area from coming aground. A few years ago the National Park Service purchased them back again and placed them in the Three Sisters Park. One has been totally renovated to its original state.
