PRESENTATION DESCRIPTIONS (1 hour)
- Get a MUVE On! Guide to Second Life for K-12 Educators
- This presentation will explore the educational possibilities of the use of MUVEs to support teaching and learning. Participants will be taken on a guided tour of sites in the main grid of Second Life and begin to explore this engaging environment!
- Shedding Light on Web 2.0
- Web 2.0 is all the rage! Take an enlightening journey through useful (and fun) online tools to help you grow both personally and professionally! Explore the capabilities of how these emerging tools can support professional development and learning for educators. Over thirty cool tools to support teaching and learning will be covered and participants will be ready to try them out on their own!
- Navigating Primary Sources on the Internet
- This presentation will provide participants with strategies, tips, and tricks on the best ways to use many different types of primary sources in each of the major content areas, including math, social studies, science, ELA, foreign language, health, geography, and the visual arts. The participants will come away with an understanding of how to easily locate these materials and how to use them to support teaching and learning, and also be introduced to some of the great primary resource portals on the Web.
- We Interrupt this Broadcast: Using Public Service Announcements in the Classroom
- This presentation will provide participants with a background into how the PSA can be used to support teaching and learning by outlining ways to use, and have students create, public service announcements to support the content areas. Reminisce with some of the old favorites, become familiar with the qualities of a well-done PSA, and view some award-winning student productions!
- Visual and Video Literacy:
How to Create Multimedia Presentations that Help Viewers Learn Best
- This presentation will introduce the participants to some of the research dealing with visual and video literacy and how people learn best. It will provide, through demonstration and discussion, some practical tips and tricks to help both teachers and students develop presentations incorporating educational videos in a meaningful way.
- A Day in the Life of an Educator's Handheld
- Follow an educator through a typical work day, from sun-up to sun-down, in this presentation which documents, via short video clips, the multitude of ways the handheld computer can be used for personal, professional, instructional, educational, and recreational uses. The applications and hardware employed during the presentation will be demonstrated.
- The Magic of Technology Gadgets for Educators
- The "gadget queen" will present the must-have technology gadgets for educators. Framing it with "the way it was" and "the way it is now", participants will explore everything from storage devices to tablet PC's and everything in between! Teachers will come away with an idea of how technology can "magically" help them both in the classroom and in their personal lives.
- Planting the Seeds of Change: The New Information Literacy Skills
- Learn about the history of information literacy and how you can help your students become
experts in using these content and process skills. Learn how you can infuse them throughout every subject area in order for students to internalize these important new skills.
- The ABC's of Web Site Evaluation
- Twenty-six criteria for the critical evaluation of a Web page are covered including authority, authenticity, and applicability to purpose. Tips and tricks to help educators determine the best way to critically evaluate Internet information are included.
- The Icing on the Cake: Online Tools for Teaching and Learning
- Integration of the Internet into instruction takes planning and practice. Investigate over thirty online tools and learn how they work and how to infuse them easily into your classroom curriculum.
- eXtreme searching: how to avoid eXtreme frustration
- Search tools are becoming more sophisticated, specialized, and super-fast! Come learn the tips and tricks to keep up with the changing face of searching technology and search tools available on the Web.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
- Get a MUVE On! Guide to Second Life for Educators
- This hands-on workshop will explore the educational possibilities of the use of MUVEs to support teaching and learning. Participants will create an avatar in Second Life, be taken on a guided tour, and begin the explore the possibilities for both professional and classroom use! (1/2 day)
- Computers, Curriculum, Communication, and the Classroom
- This hands-on workshop will help you identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability, continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning, and identify and use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning. (1/2 or whole day)
