Since 1978, the federal government has rated vehicles based on crash testing at 35 miles per hour into rigid barriers. The Insurance News Network however, attempts to provide more realistic crash tests by driving cars into collapsable barriers at 40 miles per hour. The Network states that the test is more like "auto-to-auto accidents".
