Preparing for the Investigation

Before you begin your investigation the Director of the Institute requires that you familiarize yourself with the subject. You will need to learn to identify the elements which point to bias and slant in a news report or article. Read each of the articles listed below (including the one which you locate) and follow the directions as given.

  Use the information you find in this article to make a list of techniques which willl help you to uncover bias. Make a Bias Detector Chart which you will use to check for bias in the articles you will investigate.

  This article by Jeff Williams will give you a different point of view on the topic

• Locate one article or section of a book which discusses bias in the news. It may be from a newspaper, the Internet, or one of our CD-ROMS. The Center for Media Literacy site and sites listed under additional resources on the home page may also be helpful. Put the article in your bias investigation file.
