Giving Photographs the Critical Eye

Observe

This photograph was taken during the American Civil War. It shows a group of soldiers relaxing around the camp. Note the loaves of bread and the man holding the dog. One of the men is holding a book he is reading while several of the soldiers are smoking.

Do you think this photograph was staged? Or do you think the photographer came upon these men just like this, all relaxing together? What do you think the photographer was trying to tell the viewer? Imagine that this photograph was taken after a bloody battle in which many men were wounded or killed. Imagine that this photgraph ran on the same page of the newspaper as the story of the bloody battle. Could you accuse the newspaper of trying to mold the reader's image of the war? How? Be prepared to discuss your opinions on this at the next News Watch meeting.

Locate

Use a mix of print and on-line news sources to locate and print or copy four photographs. At least two must be accompanied by an article.

Describe

Describe each photograph. Describe who or what is in it and what is going on in the photo. State two things you could conclude from this photograph.

Describe how the photograph complements the story. Does it help the reader to understand what the article discusses? Why do you think this photo was chosen to accompany this article?

Place your completed work in your folder.
